The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) in collaboration with Global Surveys Research (GSC), Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU), and the Ministry of Women and Social Action (MMAS) will conduct a three-year cohort study to understand the situation of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) and their households in Mozambique.

As of March 31, 2009 USG, PEPFAR-funded Implementing Partners in Mozambique reported 122,777 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) receiving between one and six essential services.  All but one of the IPs are international NGOs which implement activities through local community-based organizations.  While partners report routine process data (i.e. number of OVC receiving services) to USG and to Government of Mozambique, there are no existing data of quantitative baseline measures, needs assessments, program outcomes, and impact or quality of care.

Based on the data and research and evaluation needs identified by the Mozambican USAID Mission and the GOM, the Mozambique USAID Mission contracted Boston University Centre for Global Health and Development (BU CGHD) OVC-CARE Project, under the Project SEARCH mechanism, to undertake the following activities:

  • Carry out a Targeted Research and Evaluation Capacity Building Program
  • Conduct a Cohort study to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of OVC interventions over time
We are currently in the process of conducting a mixed methods study of OVC and their households in four locations throughout Mozambique.
