Malawi is a
land-locked nation of nearly 14 million people in sub-Saharan Africa.
An estimated 76% of the population lives on less than US$2 per day. Nationwide,
22% of Malawians classify as "ultra poor", which occurs when total
consumption per capita on food and nonfood items is lower than the standard
minimum food expenditure. Life expectancy is 40 for males and 41 for females. Malawi
has high rates of infant and child mortality and one in four children is
under-nourished. The HIV prevalence rate in 2006 was estimated at 14% so that
940,000 people are living with HIV, while 550,000 children have been orphaned.
Only 20% of those requiring antiretroviral treatment received it in 2006.
Although households affected by AIDS are not specifically targeted in this
pilot, many of the recipient households are AIDS-affected as evidenced by the
high percentage of orphans living in the recipient households, the frequency of
skipped generation households in a context where HIV is the leading cause of
death among adults aged 15-49, and self-reports of HIV status among recipients.
The latest estimates suggest that approximately 25% of pregnant women at
sentinel surveillance sites in Mchinji were HIV positive (UNAIDS, 2003).
